The Trauma Series: Roots, Experiences, & Healing

The Trauma Series is a long-term project that will eventually be turned into a URO Student Powered Podcast. This series will focus on the connections between the history of policing, incarceration, and trauma. Reimagining our justice system requires conversations rooted in how to create a healing community out of immense trauma. This is embodied in trauma responsive work which focuses on addressing the trauma associated with the entire criminal justice system--including 1) trauma experienced by those who are incarcerated/their family members, or 2) those who are disproportionately targeted by the carceral system, and 3) those on the β€œother side” involved in enforcement practices and political processes. It is our goal to promote conversations about trauma where they are missing by creating a space for content and context experts to have productive conversations with the public. From this, we hope to derive actionable steps to incorporate this directly into the criminal justice system (e.g., URO’s trauma responsive municipal certification project).

Roots, Experiences, & Healing: Trauma in Policing

April 28, 2021

Introducing URO’s Trauma Town Hall Discussion Series: Roots, Experiences, & Healing. This pilot episode features a panel discussion on the relationship between the History of Policing, Incarceration, and Trauma and how marginalized communities are disproportionately impacted. The recommendations for a reimagination of policing in Tompkins County and Ithaca call for a Trauma-Informed Administration of Public Safety. Our goal is to develop a conversation around this issue to excavate the deeper truths behind the desires for such a system change. We want to facilitate an examination of the possibilities of a new way of operation that encompasses an understanding of a deep history fraught with trauma that simultaneously moves us to become a community of healing. Healing and justice must be preceded by truth and reconciliatory action. Led by Christa Nunez, this panel features Darnell Epps, Dr. Jamila Michener, Psychologist Jessye Cohen Filipic, Professor Sabrina Karim, Community Organizer Shawanna Vaughn, and Professor Rosa Brooks.
